Dissolved Manganese in Lithium-Ion Batteries

How long does a lithium-ion battery last? The rate of manganese dissolution can help answer this question.

Overview: Lithium-ion batteries are used to power electronics like smartphones, laptops, and digital cameras. Manganese-based batteries have a better safety record and a lower production cost than other types of lithium-ion batteries. However, they also have a shorter lifetime due to manganese dissolving when the battery is charged and discharged.

Method: Ion chromatography (IC) is used to determine dissolved manganese in a simulated electrolyte solution for lithium-ion batteries. To simplify eluent preparation, minimize run-to-run variation, and improve sensitivity, a Reagent-Free IC (RFIC) system with suppressed conductivity detection is used, along with a Thermo Scientific™ Dionex™ IonPac™ CS12A column set.

Results: The combination of the RFIC system and IC column yielded an accurate method, with a linear relationship between analyte concentration and peak area of manganese. A 20 μL injection of the 0.1 mg/L standard produced a peak of significant size and good peak shape, while the non-suppressed method produced a small tailing peak for a 1 mg/L standard, demonstrating the sensitivity benefit of using RFIC and suppressed conductivity detection.
