Identifying Spacecraft Contaminants with Portable Raman Spectroscopy

The assembly, integration and test phase of spacecraft engineering holds the highest risk for contamination in the project lifecycle. In a recent study published by the SPIE. Digital Library, contamination control engineers at NASA used the i-Raman EX’s 1064 technology to test for contaminants in a thermal vacuum chamber. It was concluded that by utilizing portable Raman spectroscopy, engineers are able to rapidly identify contaminants such as silicone, hydrocarbon, fluorocarbon, ester, and a glycol polymer.
